75 Hard vs a 90-day challenge: pick the length and the rules you will actually finish
75 Hard is a fixed rule set with a Day 1 restart, while a 90-day challenge has no standard rules: you choose them. Choose 75 Hard if you want a strict, famous script. Choose a 90-day challenge if you want rules that fit your life, a longer runway and a way back after a slip.
They are not the same kind of thing
This is the first thing to know. 75 Hard is a specific rule set from one creator: two 45-minute workouts, one outdoors, a chosen diet with no cheat meals and no alcohol, a gallon of water, ten pages of non-fiction and a progress photo, for 75 days, with a restart on Day 1 if you miss anything. The official page asks for "zero compromises".
A 90-day challenge is not a brand or a rule set. We searched for a standard definition and found none: the results were mostly paid programmes, journals and personal-development pages, and we opened none of them. So when someone says "I'm doing a 90-day challenge", the rules are whatever they wrote down.
That changes the question. You are not choosing between 75 and 90. You are choosing between someone else's rules and your own.
Side by side
| 75 Hard | LIVEHARD (official, longer) | A custom 90-day challenge | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 75 days | A year: 75 Hard, then three 30-day phases | 90 days |
| Who sets the rules | The creator | The creator | You |
| If you miss a task | Restart at Day 1 | Restart the stage, or the whole programme in Phase 3 | You decide before you start |
| Rest day | None | None | If you add one |
| Fixed list of tasks | Yes | Yes, plus extras in the phases | Your choice |
| Evidence | Little to no scientific evidence for the programme itself, per Cleveland Clinic | Not assessed in the sources we read | Depends on what you choose |
The LIVEHARD column comes from the creator's help centre, which says Phase 1 adds a cold shower, extra tasks and visualisation, that you must wait at least 30 days before Phase 2, and that failing Phase 3 means going back to Day 1 of 75 HARD. The page may be older than the current rules, so check it before you plan a year around it.
What habit research says about 75 versus 90
The most-cited habit study is Lally and colleagues (2010). It followed 96 undergraduates for 84 days, and the average time to reach a plateau of automatic behaviour was 66 days. The individual spread was huge: from 18 days to a predicted 254. A single missed day had little effect on later progress, though many misses lowered the level reached.
Read that carefully. Automaticity was self-reported, each participant picked one health behaviour to repeat daily, which is a long way from two workouts and a gallon of water, and the study ran 84 days, so it cannot tell you what happens at 75 or at 90. What it does say is useful: there is no magic number, and people differ a lot. By our own arithmetic, 90 days is 15 days more than 75, a bit over two weeks of extra practice and a bit more room for a bad week.
When 75 Hard is the right pick
- You like a script and hate deciding.
- You are already active and healthy. The 75 Hard for beginners guide covers the alternative.
- A restart does not make you spiral. If it does, read what to do after a missed day.
- You want the story: "I did 75 Hard".
When a 90-day challenge fits better
- Your life has moving parts: shifts, kids, travel, training for something else.
- You want to choose the rules, not copy them.
- You prefer a streak that has a way back.
- You want to change a habit that 75 Hard does not mention, such as screen time, sleep or spending.
A five-question test
- Can you do two workouts a day for 75 days without injury? If not, the strict rules are not for you.
- Does one slip push you to quit? If yes, pick rules with a recovery path.
- Do you have a flight, a move or an exam in the next 90 days? If yes, use your own rules.
- Do you want the 75 Hard name, or the result? The name needs the exact rules.
- Will you actually track it every day? If not, change the rules until you will.
Mostly "strict": 75 Hard, or 75 Soft as a first step. Mostly "flexible": a custom 90-day challenge.
How to write a 90-day contract that you can keep
Here is an example, labelled illustrative and written by us. It is not a recommendation for any person's health.
| Rule | Hard or soft | Minimum on a bad day |
|---|---|---|
| One planned workout, 30 minutes | Hard | 15-minute walk |
| Read 10 pages | Hard | 2 pages |
| No phone in bed | Soft | Phone across the room |
| Plan tomorrow in 5 minutes | Soft | Three bullet points |
| Photo once a week | Soft | Skip if travelling |
The point is the structure: a few rules, two kinds, and a written minimum. Hard rules break the streak. Soft rules only count toward today. Decide what a miss means in advance, and put the Day 90 date where you can see it. The 75 Hard calculator has a 90-day setting, and Day 90 falls 89 days after Day 1.
If you want an app to hold it
Ninety is our own app, so weigh that. It runs 90 days, it is not an official 75 Hard product and it does not claim to be one. You choose disciplines from 99 options across 10 areas, mark them hard or soft, and see Day X / 90 and your streak on top of each day. Miss three days running and it asks what you want to do: pause and resume with a later end date, push through, or start over. For a comparison with paper and other apps, see the best 75 Hard tracker.
Questions people ask
Is a 90-day challenge better than 75 Hard?
Neither is proven better. Cleveland Clinic says there is little to no scientific evidence that 75 Hard itself is beneficial, and no study we read compares 75 and 90 days. A 90-day challenge suits you if you want to choose your own rules; 75 Hard suits you if you want a strict script.
Is there an official 90-day version of 75 Hard?
Not that we found. The creator's year-long programme, LIVEHARD, starts with 75 HARD and adds three 30-day phases within a year. It is a longer path, but it is not a 90-day challenge.
How long does it take to form a habit?
It varies. In the best-known study (Lally et al., 2010) the average time to reach a plateau of automaticity was 66 days, with individuals ranging from 18 days to a predicted 254. Neither 75 nor 90 days is a threshold.
Is Ninety the official 75 Hard app?
No. Ninety is an independent 90-day challenge app from EASYTECH. Its App Store listing says it is built on the same psychology as 75 Hard. 75 HARD is a separate programme with its own creator and brand.
How many weeks is 90 days?
12 weeks and 6 days. 75 days is 10 weeks and 5 days. The 75 Hard calculator on this site shows the exact finish date for either length.
